Health Industry Exchange released eHealth conformant GP software and completed the first connection to the national PCEHR System
On 29 August 2012, Dr Suzanne Williams from Inala Primary Care in Brisbane’s west became the first Doctor to upload a clinical document into the national PCEHR System.
Dr Williams used Health Industry Exchange’s Companion application and Best Practice software to create a Shared Health Summary and save it into the patient’s PCEHR record.
Health Industry Exchange CEO, Brett Silvester, demonstrated his confidence in the System by being the first patient in Australia to allow his doctor to share his health summary using the National eHealth Record System.
Mr Silvester was able to view his health summary loaded by the Doctor by logging on to the Consumer Portal.

Sample Shared Health Summary using HIE Companion
Dr John Aloizos AM MBBS FRACGP FAICD, long-time supporter of innovation in General Practice and Chairman, Inala Primary Care and Dr John Bennett BMedSc MBBS BAHons (CompSci) PhD FRACGP FACHI of Medical Informatics Consulting; who are both NeHTA Clinical Leads; worked with Health Industry Exchange during the design and testing of HIE’s Companion App to provide the GP perspective and optimise usability.
Currently, HIE’s Companion works with the Australian Practice Management Software, Best Practice. The company has been working closely with Dr Frank Pyefinch and his team at Best Practice to integrate their Practice Management System with PCEHR connectivity.
The HIE Companion application was granted PCEHR Production Access by the eHealth Operations Branch of the Department of Health and Ageing in late August after successfully completing the Conformance and Accreditation requirements.
As the technology supplier to the PCEHR Wave 1 sites, Health Industry Exchange has been refining the development of the Companion and its shared health summary for over 18 months. The company has been working in partnership with GPs, Medicare Locals and NeHTA to meet not only conformance and compliance requirements, but user and patient expectations and needs.
The release of this GP Companion software gives Doctors the green light to connect to the National eHealth Record System for the electronic sharing of patient’s selected medical information.
